Derrick called me and said "I know we don't have a ton of extra money right now but we need to do something fun as a family. Want to go bowling tonight?"
I asked if things were ok, if he got a raise or found some money somewhere or something. I am usually the one that makes suggestions like that. Of course I jumped at the chance for a night out with my favorite people!
We went to Bajio for dinner and then to Spare Time for some bowling and bouncy fun. The kids really enjoy bowling but when there are bounce houses and slides right behind us, calling their name, their attention span is about two frames. We made them hold out and finish our game but they both wanted to head straight for the blow up toys.
Waiting for her ball to make it to the pins...
Of course Derrick bowled a decent game. He always wins! (Really... in the 12 years we have been married I have never won. Maybe I'll have to take lessons. :D)
Easton's turn...Madi's up...
Watching mommy bowl...
Are we done yet?
Easton kept getting so excited for his turn that he would stand by the balls and grab them as they came out. One of the times he wasn't fast enough and got his fingers smashed. A kiss better from daddy and all those tears melted away.
And the final scores...
Madi went straight for the trampoline. She never gets tired of it!
Easton was funny. He kept going to the rides and arcade games. At one point Derrick went and got a dollar worth of tokens for Easton and one for Madi. He put the token in and the ride started. Easton started crying and jumped out of his seat. He wanted nothing to do with the rides after that. :D
Madi liked them though. She jumped and played hard! I dressed her in a thick sweater because it was chilly outside. She was so sweaty and red by the time we left I thought she was going to over heat!
At the end of the night Madi saw an arcade game with a gun that you shoot safari animals. She grabbed it and was pretending to shoot. I explained to her that we don't shoot just anything. We don't kill animals just for fun and we never shoot people, not even pretending. She started crying and said "I just want to shoot things." I asked her where what she had seen that had shooting and killing. Then it dawned on me... Wreck It Ralph. Both Madi and Easton loved that movie and had watched it almost every day for the two weeks they had had it. I realized that was when they had started being more disobedient and mean to each other. I took the movie away and although they still ask for it and ask why they can't watch it, they have been immensely better since I hid it.
I forget sometimes how impressionable their little spirits are. I forget that things that aren't real really are to them. I forget that they grasp onto any word or idea they watch and hear. It broke my heart that I had exposed them to such disgusting behavior and that at the age of three, I had to tell my precious girl that it was not ok to shoot things.
Aside from the night ending on that, it was a welcomed night out! Thank you Derrick for suggesting it.
